New Delhi, August 01 Housing Scheme 08 — the Delhi Development Authority’s latest offering of affordable houses for citizens — will be launched on August 6, two years after a similar exercise in 2006.
Up for grabs are 5,010 one, two and three-bedroom flats, which will be allotted through a computerised draw of lots. All freehold properties, the flats are within the price range of Rs 7.2 lakh and Rs 77.8 lakh depending on size and location.
DDA spokesperson Neemo Dhar said: “Our aim is to provide affordable homes to all strata.” In 2006, the DDA had put up 3,000 flats for sale for which it received over two lakh applications.
Authorities are certain of a good response this time too since the flats are priced at 30 to 40 per cent less than the corresponding market rates.
Realtor in Motia Khan Anil Sarkar said the DDA is offering a three-bedroom flat here for Rs 77.8 lakh when existing rates are up to Rs 1.2 crore.
However, a DDA official said all flats have a provisional freehold charge of Rs 11,000 to Rs 1.04 lakh.
A bulk of these flats are located in Dwarka, Narela and Rohini. There are a few in Pitampura, Paschim Vihar, Vasant Kunj, Zafrabad and Peeragarhi.
In all, there are 3,483 one-bedroom flats, 889 two-bedroom flats, 352 three-bed room flats and 286 that can be later expanded. The last — in Narela and Bindapur — are at present single-storeyed with provisions for two more to come over them.
Incidentally, Narela is offering the cheapest flats because the land price is lower here, an official from the development agency said.
Those interested have to fill in an application form and submit it with a draft of Rs 1.5 lakh as refundable deposit. The draw is expected to be held by December 2008 or January 2009.
The application forms, along with a brochure on the scheme, will be available between August 6 and September 16 at the Delhi Development Authority’s sales counter in Vikas Sadan and in almost all branches of the Axis Bank, HDFC, ICICI and IDBI. The form is available for Rs 100.

The Solar Eclipse:

A solar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes between the Sun and the Earth so that the Sun is wholly or partially obscured. This can only happen during a new moon, when the Sun and Moon are in conjunction as seen from the Earth. At least two and up to five solar eclipses occur each year on Earth, with between zero and two of them being total eclipses. Total solar eclipses are nevertheless rare at any location because during each eclipse totality exists only along a narrow corridor in the relatively tiny area of the Moon's umbra.

A total solar eclipse is a spectacular natural phenomenon and many people travel to remote locations to observe one. The 1999 total eclipse in Europe helped to increase public awareness of the phenomenon, as illustrated by the number of journeys made specifically to witness the 2005 annular eclipse and the 2006 total eclipse. The next solar eclipse will occur on August 1, 2008, and will be a total eclipse.
In ancient times, and in some cultures today, solar eclipses have been attributed to supernatural causes. Total solar eclipses can be frightening for people who are unaware of their astronomical explanation, as the Sun seems to disappear in the middle of the day and the sky darkens in a matter of minutes.

The solar eclipse that takes place on August 1, 2008 will be a total eclipse of the Sun with a magnitude of 1.039 that will be visible from a narrow corridor through northern Canada (Nunavut), middle of Russia, western Mongolia, and China. Here are a few superstitions associated with Eclipses, common amongst most Indians, followed by safe ways to view an eclipse.
Viewing a solar eclipse, total or partial, is no doubt an exciting event. Most children study eclipses, and seeing one will definitely help them understand and appreciate the topic a lot more. You don't have to book tickets to Libya in enthusiasm, but if the eclipse will be visible from your city, do make it a point to show it to your children. There are certain superstitions associated with eclipses in the Indian culture.

Here are some of them.
Pregnancy A very prominent myth states that a pregnant woman should not view the eclipse, nor should she step out in the sun during an eclipse. As a result, thousands of pregnant women in India have been warned to stay home between the hours of 4:00 to 6:30. Some 'pandits' go a step further and advise the women to lie down and rest during this period. It is said that if a woman steps out during an eclipse, her child will be born with marks all over his body. A pregnant woman should also not hold a pair of scissors, a pen, keys or any sharp object in her hand during an eclipse, because chances are that her child will be born with a cleft lip. Some pandits have stated that husbands too should do the same, and that they too should not handle any sharp objects or a pen for these hours, and it would be best if they returned home and rested for a few hours with their wives. After all, no one wants to take a chance with their unborn baby!

The Democratic presidential contender has decided to buy $5 million in national advertising on NBC during the broadcast of the Olympic games, an NBC spokeswoman confirmed Wednesday. The ads will appear on network and cable channels.
The ad purchase was first reported Wednesday on the Web site of Advertising Age, a magazine that covers the industry.
The Olympics, to be held in Beijing, will open Aug. 8. Such an extensive purchase of ad time would give Obama wide exposure before the Democratic National Convention, to be held the last week in August.
Obama has the resources: He has set fundraising records and reported raising $52 million in June, more than twice the $21.5 million raised by his rival, Republican John McCain.

Cabinet approves 8 more new IITs
As many as eight new Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) would be set up in the country during the current academic session to impart high quality technical education.
The new IITs would come up in Bihar, Andhra Pradesh, Rajasthan, Orissa, Gujarat, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh and Indore in Madhya Pradesh at an estimated cost of Rs 6,080 crore, Finance Minister P Chidambaram said after a meeting of the Union Cabinet.
With the creation of new IITs, high quality technical education will become accessible to bright students as hardly two per cent of about three lakh students, who appear in the Joint Entrance Examination could get admissions in them, he said.The Cabinet also approved creation of 30 faculty posts per year in the first three years of establishment of each of the new IITs, besides approving the posts of a director and Registrar.A decision was also taken to raise the grade of all existing IIT Directors to Rs 26,000 (fixed) from Rs 25,000 now.
The IITs of Andhra Pradesh, Bihar and Gujarat would commence their classes for about 120 students each for B.Tech programmes through temporary campuses and would be mentored by IITs of Madras, Guwahati and Bombay respectively.The three IITs of Rajasthan, Punjab and Orissa will start their classes in the campuses of their mentor IITs at Kanpur, Delhi and Kharagpur respectively, while the IITs at Indore and Himachal Pradesh will begin their sessions from the academic session 2009-10.

Google (GOOG) now brings us Lively, a web-driven mini-virtual world.Not a contiguous, immersive, fully user-created metaverse like Second Life, as it turns out– so it’s not really a direct competitor– but a series of virtual world chatrooms more akin to IMVU. (However, IMVU has a virtual economy of user-created content, while Lively does not, least not yet.). Google Lively Turns The Web Into Our Favorite Virtual Destination.

Advantages over other MMO's

Lively users are able to customize their avatars as they please, chat and interact through animated actions. As Wang said, Google discovered in their user research how much more poignant it is to receive an animated hug than seeing the text “[[hug]]”.

Users will be able to watch YouTube videos and other website content in these virtual rooms, as well as show photos in virtual picture frames inside the rooms, which can be integrated in Web sites and blogs, Google explained.

Sony to release PS3 firmware update 2.41 this week

Sony released the long anticipated 2.40 firmware update for its PlayStation 3 console. A few users however, were met with bricked consoles or otherwise had freezing glitches and other software failure. Sony then removed the update from its site, and users trying to update through their PS3 were told firmware 2.36 was the latest available. According to new reports however, the firmware update will be back, this time as version 2.41 and will be released sometime this week, most likely on Wednesday, one week after it was originally launched. Hopefully the new update will fix all of 2.40's issues and all users who were not able to get the update when it was available will get in-game XMB access and trophies

After mango gets pulpy remove their seed and green cover, white part should be properly mixed in water.

We all love our family, our friends and of course ourselves. So now the time is to love who is keeping us alive yes our earth, our environment.
Today when global warming is taking its head out why cant we take all hands together to help our earth live long life with its green-clean beauty by saving valuable resources of earth.
We all can do little to make it big for the healthy environment.
All we know daily what task we perform. So we can start it from our home.
1) Save water-
We all use water which is now becoming the costlier/unsafe even to drink.
So save water while we drink, wash utensils, cloths and wash our cars.
Do not use direct flow of water when we wash things, take water in containers that will also make us understand how much water daily we are spending. Take as much you need for drinking do not take excessive and throw it.

2) Save Electricity-
Yes some people do think about it and some don't. You can save electricity by not wasting it when it is not required. Do not use lights when we work in the morning and do tell your kids to switch off everything when you are leaving home so it will help them understand too.

3) Use food to make food for plants
We waste food many time use that food for plants of course have some knowledge about what your plants food.

There is growing consensus that cell phone antennas may be harmful to humans due to the huge volume of electromagnetic waves that get concentrated around it during the receipt and placing of calls. This danger is even further aggravated by cellular manufacturers who place the internal antennas close to the earpiece.Mobile phones are basically radio sets and therefore emit energy radio signals that can penetrate the body and cause harm. There have been several commissions on the study of the effect of mobile phone on the human body and the most pronounced has been The Stewart Report which suggested that radio waves indeed penetrate human bodies from mobile phone antennas and specially recommended that children who obviously have softer skulls be extra careful and use the device sparingly. The report further went on to state that the brain cells of children are not as fully developed as those of adults and can therefore be at greater risk as they absorb the radiation more than fully hardened adult skulls.These hazards may exist but cell phones have become part of everyday living like cars and cannot be dispensed with. In the light of this fact, doing away with our phones may not be a practical approach to solving the health hazards issue. Rather we can adopt some habits to mitigate the effects of the radiation.Children should not use cell phones for long calls. They should sue land lines instead so as to minimize the length of contact with the radiation emitted by the device.Consumers should buy phones with low specific absorption rate (SAR). Mobile phones should be kept away from the body as much as possible. They can be put in the purse or bag and only brought into contact with the body when there is the need to make or receive a call.Users should try to keep their conversations short.If possible, SMS messages can be sent instead of calls so that there is less contact with the body especially around the skull area.Keep switching between both ears so that one particular ear does not absorb the full brunt of the radiation all the time.Radiation emission is at the highest when the phone is trying to connect so keep the phone away from the skull till you see the call fully connected.Weak signal results in higher radiation so avoid making calls in areas where reception is poor as the device will try to boost its power to get you a connection and resultantly bombard you with more radiation.We cannot do away with cellular devices looking at the convenience they have ushered consumers in. Nevertheless, we can adopt some helpful attitudes to minimize the harmful effects this technology is bringing to mankind.

Online distance learning has gained rapid popularity with the advent of the internet, which has proven to offer great supporting facilities and convenience for online education. However, just like everything else with pros and cons, the internet has also opened doors for the widespread sale of bogus online degrees. According a report by USA Today, there were already 400 diploma mills in the year 2003 and the numbers are rising. In fact, many of these unscrupulous operations are run by organizations in an industry that is worth $500 million a year. However, amidst the negative hype about online education, there are actually many distance learning colleges offering valid degrees and diplomas. These institutions do not sell bogus certificates, but actually aim to provide quality education as alternatives for on-campus higher education. Valid online courses with online video lectures as well as online library facilities and test examinations conducted are often deployed to ensure that students truly qualify in their areas of study and graduate legitimately. Sadly though, many employers only see the negative side of things, and easily brush off online education degrees as equivalent to bogus degrees.In view of the confusion, the National Education Board of the U.S. government has authorized 6 accreditation agencies to provide institutional accreditation to education institutions, as a measure to differentiate legitimate universities from the crooks. It is also important to know that only accreditation agencies recognized by the Department of Education or CHEA are considered accreditation agencies which are acknowledged.What does accreditation mean to a student? An institutional accreditation agency evaluates the various aspects of universities or colleges against minimum standard criteria to determine if the particular institution meets their list of basic requirements. College accreditation is necessary to ensure that the education, facilities and support provided by a college or university adheres to basic levels. On the other hand, specialized accreditation evaluates excellence in individual program regardless of which institution the program is being delivered within. In this type of accreditation, course content and program curricula is evaluated against pre-set standards of the institution. All accreditation does is to assure employers, students and parents that the graduates who are awarded degrees from accredited colleges have undergone adequate training in their respective areas of specialization. This also means that colleges that are not accredited by the proper accreditation body would not have met the standards imposed by the agencies. However, courses taken by prospective employees that are accredited by the respective agencies would have met standards imposed on the respective specialized areas.It is totally up to the judgment and decision of the employers on evaluating the validity of an online or on-campus degree. With the recent hike in bogus degrees, employers can’t help but be stringent in their applicant screenings and consider those with degrees that have been accredited. This may prove tedious and sometimes employers may get confused. Therefore, if your accreditation is provided by an agency recognized by the US Department of Education, then you will need to explain to prospective employers on the background of the accrediting bodies. According to the American Diabetes Association, 21 million Americans have diabetes but about 30 percent of them are unaware that they have the disease.
Tuesday marks the 20th Annual American Diabetes Alert Day, a one-day call to action encouraging people to take the Diabetes Risk Test and seek advice from a trusted health care professional. For many, diagnosis comes several years after onset of the disease and not until something drastic occurs, like a heart attack.
That's because diabetes develops gradually over time, said Dr. Barry Goldstein, professor of medicine at Jefferson Medical College of Thomas Jefferson University.
"The issue really with diabetes is that so much of it is undetected," he said.
Some symptoms of diabetes include frequent urination, excessive thirst and hunger, unusual weight loss, increased fatigue, irritability and blurry vision.
General risk factors for diabetes include overweight or obesity, physical inactivity, over age 45, and a family history of diabetes. In addition to these general risk factors, African-Americans, Latinos, Native Americans, Asian Americans, and Pacific Islanders are at an increased risk.
Those with one or more of these risk factors are encouraged to take the American Diabetes Risk Test.
The risk test requires users to answer seven questions about their weight, age, lifestyle and family history all potential risk factors for diabetes. Those who score 10 points or more are at a high risk for Type 2 diabetes and are encouraged to see a health care professional for further evaluation.
Even with high risk factors, some people might simply choose to ignore the situation.
"A lot of people are afraid to know that they have diabetes, because they think it's kind of condemning them to get complications from it," said Goldstein, who is also the director of the Division of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolic Diseases at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia.
Early diagnosis is critical to successful treatment as well as to delaying or preventing some of its complications, such as heart disease, blindness, kidney disease, stroke, amputation and death.
"The longer you wait, the more likely it is that before you're diagnosed you already have these complications going on," Goldstein said.
"As long as the blood sugar is higher than normal, we know that it's damaging the body's tissues," he added
Goldstein noted that it's important for people to realize that treatment is much easier than some would imagine.
"They should know that we have modern approaches and we know we can delay complications for many years in almost everyone."

DENGUE FEVER and PRECAUTIONS

Dengue fever and dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF) are viral diseases transmitted by Aedes mosquitoes, usually Ae. aegypti. The four dengue viruses (DEN-1 through DEN-4) are immunologically related, but do not provide cross-protective immunity against each other.

What is Dengue?
Dengue (pronounced den' gee) is a disease caused by any one of four closely related viruses (DEN-1, DEN-2, DEN-3, or DEN-4). The viruses are transmitted to humans by the bite of an infected mosquito. In the Western Hemisphere, the Aedes aegypti mosquito is the most important transmitter or vector of dengue viruses, although a 2001 outbreak in Hawaii was transmitted by Aedes albopictus. It is estimated that there are over 100 million cases of dengue worldwide each year.

HOW TO RECOGNIZE DENGUE FEVER/DENGUE HAEMORRHAGIC FEVER
Dengue Fever (DF) is an acute febrile illness of 2-7 days duration (sometimes with two peaks) with two or more of the following manifestations:
• Headache
• Retro-orbital pain
• Myalgia/arthralgia
• Rash
• Haemorrhagic manifestation (petechiae and positive tourniquest test) and
• Leucopenia
In children, DF is usually mild. In some adults, DF may be the classic incapacitating disease with severe bone pain and recovery may be associated with prolonged fatigue and depression.
Dengue Haemorrhagic Fever (DHF) is a probable case of dengue and haemorrhagic tendency evidenced by one or more of the following:
• Positive tourniquet test
• Petechiae, ecchymosis or purpura
• Bleeding from mucosa (mostly epistaxis or bleeding from gums), injection sites or other sties
• Haematemesis or melena
• Thrombocytopaemia (platelets 100,000/cu.mm or less) and
Evidence of plasma leakage due to increased capillary permeability manifested by one or more of the following:
• A > 20% rise in haemotocrit for age and sex
• A > 20% drop in haemotocrit following treatment with fluids as compared to baseline
• Signs of plasma leakage (pleural effusion, ascites or hypoproteinaemia)

Dengue Shock Syndrome (DSS) All the above criteria of DHF plus signs of circulatory failure manifested by rapid and weak pulse, narrow pulse pressure (< or equal to 20 mm Hg); hypotension for age, cold and clammy skin and restlessness.
The above descriptions of DF/DHF/DSS are adequate for guiding doctors to treat the disease. However, for reporting of the disease, cases should be classified as suspected DF/DHF/DSS on the basis of above the criteria. Added serological evidence would categorize them into probable and confirmed cases.

DO’S AND DONT’S FOR PATIENTS
If you or any family member is suffering from suspected dengue fever, it is important to carefully watch yourself or relative for the next few days, since this disease can rapidly become very serious and lead to a medical emergency.
The complications associated with Dengue Fever/Dengue Haemorrhagic Fever usually appear between the third and fifth day of illness. You should therefore watch the patient for two days even after fever disappears.

WHAT TO DO:
Keep body temperature below 39oC. Give the patient paracetamol (not more than four times in 24 hours) as per the dose prescribed below:

<1 year ¼ tablet 60
1-4 years ½ tablet 60-120
5 and above 1 tablet 240
• Give large amounts of fluids (water, soup, milk, juice) along with the patient.s normal diet.
• The patient should take complete rest.
• Immediately consult a doctor if any of the following manifestations appear:
o Red spots or points on the skin;
o bleeding from the nose or gums;
o frequent vomiting;
o vomiting with blood;
o black stools;
o sleepiness;
o constant crying;
o abdominal pain;
o excessive thirst (dry mouth);
o pale, cold or clammy skin;
o difficulty in breathing.

WHAT NOT TO DO:
􀂃 Do not wait in case the above symptoms appear. Immediately consult a doctor. It is crucial to quickly get treatment in case of these complications.
􀂃 Do not take Aspirin or Brufen or Ibubrufen.

HEALTH EDUCATION FOR COMMUNITY MOBILIZATION AND INTER-SECTORAL CONVERGENCE
Involvement of household, community for Aedes mosquito control is of paramount importance as the problem revolves mainly around man and his environment. There should be a continuous dialogue between health personnel and the community so that people may accept Aedes control programmes as their own programme.
Community should be involved in the task of elimination of Aedes breeding in and around their houses for keeping houses free of larval breeding and reduction/elimination of adult mosquitoes.
Towards these objectives, massive, repetitive, intense and persistent Behavior Change Communication (BCC) campaign is crucial. The community must be assured that this is a preventable disease and empowered with the knowledge about mode of transmission, vector control options, availability of services in addition to correct treatment, so that timely and appropriate action is taken. Special campaigns may be carried out through mass media including local vernacular newspapers/magazines, radio and TV, especially using local cable networks as well as outdoor publicity like hoardings, miking, drum beating, rallies, etc. Health education materials should be developed and widely disseminated in the form of posters, pamphlets, handbills, hoardings. Inter-personal communication through group meetings, traditional / folk media particularly must be optimally utilized.
At different levels, following action may be taken:
(i) At Household Level:
􀂃 Ae aegypti mosquito bites during daytime. Adult mosquitoes should be killed by using of commercially available safe aerosols (Pyrethroid-based). Rooms including closets, bathrooms and kitchens should be sprayed (by removing/covering all food items properly) for a few minutes and closing the room for 15-20 minutes. The timing of the spray should coincide with the peak biting time of the Ae aegypti mosquito, e.g., early morning or late afternoon.
􀂃 Taking personal protection measures like wearing protective clothing (full sleeved shirts & full pants during day time) and using mosquito nets, preferably insecticide treated ones, while sleeping, even during day time. Using commercially available repellents during day time.

􀂃 People should form groups to supplement and reinforce efforts at household level. Such groups can identify commercial activities such as traders dealing in used tyres or small construction projects, etc, which may be creating larval habitats for the vector.
􀂃 The Groups should launch awareness campaigns on Dengue and seek cooperation for prevention of mosquito breeding and protection from mosquito bites. Community activities against larvae and adult mosquitoes can include:
o Cleaning and covering water storage containers.
o Keeping the surroundings clean and improving basic sanitation
measures.
• Burning mosquito coils to kill or repel the mosquitoes/burning neem leaves, coconut shells and husk to repel mosquitoes and eliminating outdoor breeding sites.
• Aiding in screening houses.
• Making available hand aerosols for killing mosquitoes.
• Cleaning weeds and tall grass to reduce available outdoor resting
places for adult mosquitoes near houses.
• Promoting use of mosquito nets to protect infants and small children from mosquito bites during day time and also insecticide treated nets and curtains to kill mosquitoes attempting to bite through the nets or resting on nets and curtains. Organizing camps for insecticide treatment of community owned mosquito nets/curtains.
• In case water containers cannot be emptied, applying Temephos (1
ppm) on weekly basis in coordination with the Health authorities.
• Mobilizing households to cooperate during spraying / fogging.
(iii) At Institutional Level (Hospitals, Schools, Colleges, Other Institutions, Offices, etc):
􀂃 Weekly checking for Aedes larval habitats especially overhead tanks, ground water storage tanks, air coolers, planters, flower pots, etc
􀂃 Ensuring source elimination by:
􀂃 Covering all water tanks with mosquito proof lids.
􀂃 Emptying, drying water containers, coolers, plant pots at least once each week.
􀂃 Checking for clogged gutters and flat roofs that may have poor drainage.
􀂃 Introducing larvivorous fishes (e.g., Gambusia / Guppy) in orrnamental water
tanks/garden.
􀂃 Carrying out Indoor Space spraying with Pyrethrum 2%. The timing of the spray should coincide with the biting time of the Ae aegypti mosquito, e.g., early morning or late afternoon.
􀂃 Carrying out fogging or Ultra Low Volume (ULV) spray by using 95% or pure
technical malathion.
􀂃 Promoting personal protection measures like wearing protective clothing (full
sleeved shirts & full pants during day time), using commercially available repellents during day time as well as mosquito nets, preferably insecticide treated ones, while sleeping, particularly during day time.
􀂃 Putting tight-fitting screens/wire mesh on doors / windows.
􀂃 In addition, notification of fever cases (suspected/confirmed) to concerned Health authorities and appropriate case management.

Slow down if the overtaking vehicle needs more space and give it to a clear signal to overtake.
CAUTION
If someone foolishly tries to overtake you dangerously in spite of heavy oncoming traffic, it is better to stop your vehicle on the extreme left.

CHIKUNGUNYA FEVER
CAUSE:
Chikungunya fever is a viral disease transmitted to humans by the bite of infected
mosquitoes. Chikungunya virus (CHIKV) is a member of the genus Alphavirus, in the
family Togaviridae.
SYMPTOMS:
Symptoms of both Chikungunya and dengue usually start with fever within 5 to 6
days after you have been bitten by an infected mosquito and include
o High fever, up to 105 degrees Fahrenheit
o Severe headache
o Retro-orbital (behind the eye) pain
o Severe joint and muscle pain
o Nausea and vomiting
o Rash
DIAGNOSIS:
Your health care provider can diagnose Chikungunya/dengue fever by doing two
blood tests, 2 to 3 weeks apart. The tests can show whether a sample of your blood
contains antibodies to the virus. In epidemics, a health care provider often can
diagnose dengue by typical signs and symptoms.
TREATMENT: There is no specific treatment for the fever, and like most people you
will recover completely within 2 weeks. To help with recovery, health care experts
recommend
o Getting plenty of bed rest
o Drinking lots of fluids
o Taking medicine to reduce fever
o People with fever should not take aspirin. Acetaminophen or other
over-the-counter pain-reducing medicines are safe for most people.
o For severe symptoms, including shock and coma, early and aggressive
emergency treatment with fluid and electrolyte replacement can be
lifesaving.
PREVENTION: The best way to prevent Chikungunya/dengue fever is to take
special precautions to avoid contact with mosquitoes.
o Dengue mosquito, bite during the daytime. Highest biting intensity is
about 2 hours after sunrise and before sunset.
o Wear full sleeves clothes and long dresses to cover as much of one’s
body as possible.
o Use repellents - be careful in using them on young children and old
people.
o Use mosquito coils and electric vapor mats during the daytime as well
as night to prevent dengue.
o Use mosquito nets to protect children, old people and others who may
rest during the day.
o Use a mosquito repellant, picaridin, or oil of lemon eucalyptus
o Dress in protective clothing-long-sleeved shirts, long pants, socks, and
shoes
o Keeping unscreened windows and doors closed
o Staying away from areas where mosquitoes breed, such as standing
water in flower pots, containers, birdbaths, discarded tires, etc.

Excel Patch Causing Calculation Errors

17 March 2008Microsoft admitted on Friday that a patch it released last week is causing Excel 2003 to make some incorrect calculations.
"We have updated bulletin MS08-014 to provide additional information on a newly identified issue that causes Microsoft Excel 2003 calculations to return an incorrect result when a Real Time Data source is used," Microsoft's Security Response Center's Bill Sisk wrote in a blog post last week.

"The issue affects a specific scenario and may not affect you...Our teams are testing a fix and will release it once it meets our quality bar for broad distribution," he continued.
Microsoft offers some insight into the problem in Knowledge Base (KB) article 950340. According to the KB, after the patch is applied on systems with "Microsoft Office Excel 2003 installed, array-entered functions that contain a Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) macro that refers to a Real Time Data source return an incorrect value. The incorrect value is usually 0."
According to the very short KB item, for a current workaround, Microsoft recommends, "Run the function on each cell individually instead of on the array of cells."
The only other information available in the KB is that Microsoft is working on a fix and will post more information as it becomes available.
The patch was released last week to stop versions of Excel from allowing several types of remote execution attacks.

Please don’t forget to provide the correct sender account for Message.From and a valid SMTP server for SmtpMail.SmtpServer. (Then prepare to receive hugs and flying kisses from elated users.)

If you want to get one step ahead of others, here are some more tricks:

All cellular phones accept text emails these days. And you can use the same below-mentioned function to send a text mail to the user’s mobile device. Just find out the email ID assigned by his cell provider for his cell, and you are up and running in no time. For example, ‘Idea Cellular’ in India routes incoming email for yourcellnumber@ideacellular.net to your mobile. Just remember to keep the mail text very short. Tip: The boss characters *love* these sweet email alerts!
Text mails get boring after a while. So you can use the MailFormat.Html instead of MailFormat.Text and send neatly formatted messages too. See MSDN for more details.

Trick 4: Getting IP address given the host name
You have developed the next big socket application. But your users are not sure about the IP address of the server they want to connect to. They input host name most of the time and you require IP addresses for your code to work well. No problemo… Use the following function to get the IP address of a host, given its name:

Trick 5: Writing professional log files
Well, you can always dump a few strings into a file and call it a log file. What’s the big deal? The thing is - it does not look, ahem, techie. Here is a sample which creates a log file (one per day & instance) and puts in time-stamped log entries into it. The file names are such that sorting them in Windows File Explorer is very easy for the SysAd.

Also note that logging functions will require multithreading support, so I am using the lock thingie here; you can either get rid of it (for ST apps) or use something that suits you better. Kudos to Adam for help with this trick.

Trick 6: Windows Registry and you
Windows has given you a great provision to store configuration tidbits and stuff like that… The registry. Why not use it, instead of using custom configuration files?

Below are the functions to create a registry key, and set and get a string value. You can extend the get/set couple for long values and so on. Please note that for defensive programming purpose, I am putting in the supplied default value, in case a registry value is missing. I like this approach better than crying out with an exception. If you are of the other opinion, please feel free to do what you like.

Also note that, many people prefer storing the configuration information in easily modifiable and self-maintainable XML files these days. Be sure about your and your clients' preference and then choose the best suitable option.

Trick 7: Get environment conscious
If you are not yet environment conscious, it's time to be. First, thank God. This is something we always need to look up. Now with .NET, we have a single class which lets us access all this wealth of information. What are you looking for? The OS version, CLR version, user name, values of system variables such as the temp folder, physical memory mapped to your app?

All this valuable information can be extracted with the Environment class as illustrated below:

Trick 8: Setup a hidden camera for watching a folder
Watching user activities inside a folder is often a task for application servers. For example, I have a server which needs to wait until user uploads an XML file into a special folder. Once user drops the file there, the server does some processing according to the file contents.

Once you know how to do this thing, I am sure you will find thousands of applications to utilize this trick. And it is not just limited to file creation events, you can watch on virtually all the activities users can do in there... ;)

Please note: The Created event does not guarantee that the other app or user has finished writing the file. For example, many times a server needs to wait for a user to upload a file in a specific folder. The Created event is raised as soon as the user starts uploading the file, but the server needs to wait until the copy/upload process completes. There is no ideal method I am aware of to ensure the transfer completion. A work-around is to wait until an open operation on that file can succeed. While the copy/upload is in progress, open will fail.

The above function will work with console applications only (as it has Console.Writelines). For your use, modify it the way you need.

Trick 9: Give a human face to your app
I don't know about you, but I had always starved to give my app users an extra helping hand if they need one. Microsoft provides a really neat COM component called MS Agent for this purpose. It can show a friendly cartoonish character with our app - to read text, do animations and add some life to your otherwise boring app!

(1) Add the MS Agent COM component in your VS.NET toolbox by clicking Visual Studio menu Tools > Add/remove toolbox items > COM Components. Check ‘Microsoft Agent Control 2.0’ and click ok.

(2) The agent control will now be shown under the ‘components’ tab in the VS toolbox. In your Windows Form based application, drag and drop it on your form. The component will get added to the form and you will see the following member in your form

Please note that using the Agents makes sense only in the right apps and if utilized correctly. If used in a wrong app or in a wrong way, it can be very irritating to users.

Sometimes executing a batch file or a utility program with command line arguments is so handy than to write your own code. For example suppose your program generates an report in MS Excel format, you can use the code given below to launch the freshly generated file in Excel…

One of the great features of .NET is the seamless integration it provides with Internet Explorer. For example, we can activate a Windows Forms control from IE without even prompting the user. This is accomplished without having to do any registration while still utilizing all the features of Code Access Security provided by the .NET CLR.

When you build Windows Forms controls, you have all the features provided by the Windows Forms class hierarchy. For example, you can use Windows Forms control validation techniques to perform extensive validation on the input data entered by the user. Similarly, you can even invoke a remote Web service from your forms control. By using all of these techniques, you can create rich, powerful, dynamic state-of-the-art applications using the .NET platform.

Implementation
In this section, we will see how to create a simple Windows Forms control and host it in Internet Explorer. The following list describes five steps to activate a Windows Forms control within IE.
Create a Windows Forms control

Create an HTML document with an object tag that identifies the Windows Forms control
Configure the virtual directory for proper activation of the control
Configure Code Access Permissions
Run the control

Now we will look at each of the above steps in detail.
Create a Windows Forms ControlIn this step, we will create a simple Windows Forms control. This control basically displays a "Hello World" message to the users. We will start by creating a new Visual C# Windows Control Library project named HelloWorldControl.

Once the project is created, we will rename the default user control to HelloWorldCtl. To the user control, we will add a label control named lblMessage and a button named btnClick. When the user clicks the button, we will execute the following code to display a simple message to the user.

Now that we have created the control, let us compile the project and create the assembly.
Create an HTML PageIn this step, we will create an HTML document and insert an object tag that is used to activate the Windows Forms control. The HTML page looks like the following. Create the object tag inside the html tag of page and insert classid attribute for the usercontrol path.

In the classid attribute of the object tag, we specify the path to the control library assembly and the fully qualified name of the control. This fully qualified name of the control includes the namespace as well as the name of the control class. As you can see from the above code, the assembly and the fully qualified name of the control are separated by # sign. The combination of these two parameters serves as the unique identifier to identify the control. It is also possible to write client side script against the control since it is identified by the unique id named HelloWorldControl1.

Configure the Virtual Directory

Now that we have created the HTML page, let us create a new virtual directory named HelloWorldControlHost and add both the control (HelloWorldControl.dll) and the HTML document (HelloWorld.htm). While configuring the virtual directory, it is important to set the execution permissions on the virtual directory to Scripts. The control will not be properly activated if the execution permissions are set to Scripts & Executables. You can verify this by opening up the Properties window for your virtual directory

Configuration of Code Access Permissions

If your control is from an intranet site, it will execute correctly. But if you want to run the control from an Internet site, you then need to configure Internet Explorer or alter security policy to allow it to run. You can do this by identifying your hosting page as belonging to the Trusted zone. To set your site as part of the Trusted zone, from IE choose Tools->Options->Security->Trusted Sites and then add your site to the list and then click OK. Next time, when you browse to that page, it will execute properly, since you have already set the Internet permissions.
Run the ControlTo run the control, just navigate to the HTML page that hosts the control from the browser. In the displayed HTML page, if you click on the Click Here command button, the control displays a Hello World message as shown in the following screenshot.
In this example, we looked at how to create a simple Windows Forms control and host it in Internet Explorer. In the next section, we will see how to access a Web service directly from the client machine using a Windows Forms control.
